Mira Costa Girls Softball Clinches CIF Playoff Berth

The Mira Costa High School varsity softball team is coming off of a busy week, going 2-2 on the road, improving their record to 17-7.

On Wednesday, April 29, the team visited Redondo Union High School for the battle of the unbeatens in the Bay League. 

In the first inning, senior shortstop Brittany Werre doubled but was stranded at second base. In the bottom of the second, Redondo second basewoman Allie Betty hit a sinking liner to center field with Kasey Hutton making a nice running catch. Then with 2 out, Redondo hit back to back to back singles to take a 1-0 lead. 

Mira Costa ended up with 5 hits and Redondo scored another run for a 2-0 win. Dillan Boada pitched for MCHS, giving up only 7 hits and 2 runs.   

On Friday, Mira Costa traveled to Palos Verdes High School. In the top of the first, senior centerfielder Kasey Hutton led off with a single followed by a double by shortstop Brittany Werre. Kasey then scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. 

In the second inning, rightfielder Alex Orozco hit a double down the left field line followed by Katie Gould who hit a single to right field that scored Alex for a 2-0 lead. 

In the 4th, Palos Verdes third basewoman JoniAnn Wahl hit a home run to center field, making it 2-1. 

In the top of the 6th with the score tied 2-2, Serena Ponciano hit a one-out single setting up senior leftfielder Elizabeth Lewis who sacrificed Serena to second base with Alex singling her home for a 3-2 lead. 

In the top of the 7th, Brittany singled followed by a walk by Emily Eudy. Freshman third basewoman Grace Herron then singled home Brittany for a 4-2 lead. 

In the bottom of the 7th, a grounder to MCHS shortstop Brittany Werre who threw high to first base was recovered by first basewoman Emily Eudy who jumped high and came back down on the bag just in the time for the first out. Pitcher Dillan Boada closed out the inning for a hard fought 4-2 win that guaranteed Mira Costa a CIF playoff spot.
 
On Saturday at the La Mirada tournament, Mira Costa played Cajon and fell behind 1-0. 

In the top of 4th, Cajon's catcher hit a hard grounder in the hole at short and shortstop Brittany Werre made a diving stop, got up and threw the ball in the dirt. First basewoman Emily Eudy dug it out for the first out of the inning. 

Mira Costa got hits by Kasey Hutton, Jamie Hoffman, and Alex Orozco but couldn't put them together, taking a 5-0 loss.

In the battle for 3rd place in the tournament, Mira Costa took on Whittier. 

After giving up one run in the top of the first, Mira Costa centerfielder Kasey Hutton singled, followed by walks to Brittany and Emily. Grace Herron then singled home two runs, followed by Liz Lewis who singled home another for a 3-1 lead. 

In the top of the second inning, Whittier got 2 runners on base with one out and hit a soft liner to the outfield grass which was caught by Brittany who doubled up the runner on third base to end the inning. 

After Whittier had tied the score at 3-3, shortstop Brittany Werre hit a long home run to center field to put Mira Costa ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the 5th. 

Whittier tied it up in the top of the 7th at 4-4 but in the bottom of the 7th, Brittany walked and Emily grounded out to second base, moving Brittany to second. C. Jamie Hoffman then singled to left field, putting runners at first and third. Grace Herron then hit a grounder to the shortstop who looked at the runner then threw the ball away for a 5-4 Mira Costa win. Dillan Boada pitched a complete game, striking out three.
 
Previously, the Mira Costa High School Varsity Softball team improved its record to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in Bay League with wins over Palos Verdes and Peninsula high schools in games on April 14 and 17.
 
On Wednesday, April 14 against Palos Verdes High, center fielder Kasey Hutton and third basewoman Serena Ponciano singled and catcher Jamie Hoffman tripled over the right fielder's head to score two.  

In the 3rd, Kasey Hutton doubled, followed by three walks, scoring one. Then Jamie Hoffman singled in two as Mira Costa built a 6-0 lead.  

In the top of the 4th, Palos Verdes scored two, making it 6-2.  

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Kasey Hutton led off with a double. First basewoman Emily Eudy singled her home. After two walks and one out, Elliott Estes and Liz Lewis singled runs home and right fielder Alex Orozco doubled home two more. With two out, Kasey Hutton got her 4th hit of the game, knocking in Mira Costa's last run for a 13-2 win. Dillan Boada pitched 5 innings, giving up two unearned runs and striking out one for the win.
 
On Friday at Peninsula High, to start the game, Kasey Hutton beat out an infield single, then Emily Eudy hit the next pitch over the left field fence for a quick 2-0 lead after only three pitches.  

In the bottom of the 2nd with one out, Maddie McHugh of Peninsula hit a solid base hit to the fence in left center. Center fielder Kasey Hutton picked up the ball and gunned her out as she attempted a double.  

In the bottom of the 4th, Peninsula had a runner on first and one out and hit a screaming line drive toward second base. Katie Gould made a nice catch and doubled off the runner for an inning-ending double play.  

The score remained 2-0 entering the 5th inning when second basewoman Katie Gould got a one out single. Kasey Hutton singled her over to third base and Katie scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.  

In the bottom of the 6th, Peninsula rallied for two runs and had two on and one out. Dillan Boada struck the next girl out and got the last girl to ground out, leaving the score 3-2.  

In the 7th, Peninsula had a lead-off single but Dillan got the top three in the order out to allow Mira Costa to hang on for the 3-2 win. Dillan pitched 7 innings and struck out 4 as she improved to 7-3 on the season. 

Earlier in the season, Mira Costa varsity softball improved to 4-0 in the Bay League with wins over Inglewood and Morningside.

Freshmen Grace Herron and Katie Gould each went 4 for 4 at Inglewood. Dillan Boada got the win as Dillan and Elliott Estes combined to throw a perfect game. On Friday, Mira Costa hosted Morningside and Elliott Estes got the win. Elliott and Erica Noll combined to throw a no hitter. 
 
In pool play of the La Mirada tournament on a Saturday, April 25, Gahr High beat Mira Costa even though Mira Costa had defeated them earlier in the season. In the second game, Mira Costa rebounded and beat Rialto 12-2. 

In the 2nd inning, with one out and one on, right fielder Denise Curtis singled to left. Left fielder Liz Lewis followed with a single to right center loading the bases. Freshman second basewoman Katie Gould ripped a triple to right center, scoring all 3. Center fielder Kasey Hutton then hit a deep fly to center, scoring Katie. Shortstop Brittany Werre then singled and stole second base.  First basewoman Emily Eudy singled to right, scoring Brittany and making the score 5-0.  

In the 4th, Brittany singled followed by a 225-foot bomb to right center by Emily Eudy that hit off the men's fence for a triple. It would have been in the tennis courts at Mira Costa. Rialto scored 2 runs in the top of the 5th to make the score 6-2.  

In the bottom of the 5th, pitcher Elliott Estes walked and third basewoman Grace Herron singled to left. Liz Lewis reached base on an error, scoring Elliott. Katie Gould then singled home Grace.  Center fielder Kasey Hutton then singled home Liz, followed by a single by Brittany Werre, scoring Kasey and Katie.  Emily Eudy finished 4 for 4.  

Elliott Estes pitched a five-hitter, walking none and striking out 2 to improve her record to 4-0.  Mira Costa improved to 15-5 after that game.
