Jack Walter laces a two-run double.

Youngsters ages 9 to 13 can still register to play in the Manhattan Beach Little League Memorial Day weekend tournament, according to MBLL President David Henschel.

The tournament is open to baseball players of all skill levels, boys and girls, he said, and not just kids playing in MBLL. Kids born on or after April 30, 2001 and on or before December 31, 2007, or any youngster who is a player in MBLL or Manhattan Beach Girls Softball during the Spring 2015 season is eligible to play.

About 110 youths are signed up to play in the three-game tournament, taking place Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24. The tournament does not hold games on Monday, May 25, the Memorial Day holiday.

Each youngster will be provided with a T-shirt jersey; players use their regular season hat (just like the Major League Baseball All-Stars do!), a free hot dog and a free soda. Games are played in Manhattan Beach and may include teams from other cities, said Henschel.

The tournament will group players by age but may blend tournaments depending on the number of players who register. Here are the planned tournament groupings, for now

  • Kids currently in Cal/Coach-Pitch: Will play in Coast-rules Kid-pitch Tournament
  • Kids currently in Coast/AA: Will play in AAA Int’l-rules Tournament
  • Kids currently in Int’l/AAA: Will play in Major-rules Tournament
  • Kids currently in Majors, 50/70, and Juniors age 13: Will play in Juniors wood bat Tournament on a 60/90 field with leadoffs

For many of the Cal/Coach Pitch players the tournament is their first experience with kid-pitch baseball.

The cost per player is $25 and registration can be done online here

Adults who'd like to volunteer to serve as an organizer, manager or coach (You do not need to be currently serving as a manager or coach to lead or assist a team in the Memorial Weekend Tournament) should contact tournament organizers, David Brantly and Dennis Kane.
