The Manhattan Beach community has a chance to come out to welcome the Special Olympics torch as it is carried aloft by runners on the streets of Manhattan Beach on Tuesday, July 21.

The Flame of Hope™, as it's called, will be making its final leg as it heads toward the Los Angeles Coliseum for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. It will pass through Manhattan Beach in downtown, starting promptly at 2:20 p.m. in front of the Manhattan Beach Police Department on 15th Street near city hall.

The torch will travel west toward the ocean on 15th St., then go south on Manhattan Ave., then west on Manhattan Beach Blvd. to the Manhattan Beach Pier. 

Mayor Mark Burton and MB Police Chief Eve Irvine will greet the torch and the 125 runners before they continue on The Strand to the Hermosa Beach Pier. 

An annual event, the Torch Run is an ongoing run in which officers and athletes carry the Flame of Hope™ to the opening ceremony of local Special Olympics competitions as well as State, National, and World Games.

In 2015, the Flame of Hope™ was lit from the rays of the sun in Greece, the home of the Olympics, and has traveled across the sea to the U.S., journeying through communities throughout the country and Southern California, ending at the opening ceremony of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.
