Tour de Pier Rolls Into Town This Weekend

May 09, 2016 12:15PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
It's time to "Ride in Place - Move Charity Forward." That's the motto of the popular Tour de Pier, the annual cancer charity fundraising event at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The May 15 ride, which features stationary cycling and other entertainment, is now in its fourth year and is currently 87% of the way to raising its goal of $1 million.

"It is easy to be passionate about the Tour de Pier - it combines raising money for a worthy cause and spinning with the ocean as our backdrop," said Angela Bennett, co-owner of Fit On Studios, one of the presenting sponsors of the event. "It has become one of my favorite days of the year,
and just when you thought it could not get any better... we will surprise you!"

The Tour de Pier gives participants the opportunity to ride a stationary bike over five 50-minute sessions beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the morning of the fundraiser. The fundraising minimum for each bike is $750; most participants ride in teams of five so that each rider does one session.

The event benefits the Cancer Support Community of Redondo Beach, the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, and the Uncle Kory Foundation. Event founders Jon Hirshberg and Heath Gregory are both leaders in their respective foundations benefiting cancer research.

Currently all bikes have been reserved, and there is a waitlist for riders. If you're not planning to ride, you may donate to a rider or a team directly. Additionally, tickets for the Tour de Pier after-party are still available for $20/person here.

Spectators are welcome to visit the free Health & Fitness Expo, with ongoing music and entertainment, sampling of healthy food and beverages, as well as interactive health & fitness booths. Younger visitors can enjoy the Cardio Kids Zone with tot-sized stationary bikes, games, moon bounces and more.

Last year's event surpassed its goal of $750,000 by raising $912,000, bringing the event's three year total to almost $1.8 million raised for cancer research.
