New Exhibit Features Art of John Van Hamersveld

If you've noticed something different about the Manhattan Beach Art Center as you drive down Manhattan Beach Boulevard, you're not mistaken: A frieze mural by artist John Van Hamersveld is wrapped around the art center in honor of his new exhibit.
"Contemporary Post Future: The Dichotomy of Design and Art," the works of Van Hamersveld, opens on August 25 at the art center and will run through October 16. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 25, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Van Hamersveld is an American graphic artist, designer, and illustrator who grew up in and was influenced by the South Bay and California beach culture. He began his professional career as the art director of the surfing magazine Surf Illustrated. By the mid-1960s, his groundbreaking promotional poster for the cult surf film The Endless Summer gained international recognition and praise.
In the late 1960s, he became the art director at Capitol Records, where he went on to design over 300 album covers including Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles, Exile On Main St. by the Rolling Stones, Hotter Than Hell by Kiss, and more. More recently the designer has seen his images realized on a massive scale via 12 million LEDs at the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas.
This exhibit presents past and present artworks where John Van Hamersveld explores the connection between art, design and commerce.
The art center gallery is open on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and holidays.
