Get Ready to Rock at 'Costapalooza'

Oct 24, 2016 07:53PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Ready to rock out with some of your favorite home-grown musicians? On Friday, October 28, a free music festival showcasing the musical talent of four local bands, all with ties to Mira Costa, will liven up the Mira Costa High School Quad all afternoon long.

Continuing on the success of last year’s inaugural Costapalooza music festival, the Mira Costa Alumni Association has joined with MB/X Foundation to relocate Costapalooza to the heart of the newly remodeled Mira Costa campus, the Mustang Mall (or Quad). The festival will be free to students, parents, alumni and the entire South Bay community.

Starting at 3:00 p.m., and continuing until the 7:00 p.m. kick-off of the last home Bay League football game against Palos Verdes, the festival will feature a talented and eclectic lineup of bands and musicians. The event will also include food trucks, games, a photo booth and raffle with prizes including grad tickets, Coachella tickets, L.A. Kings box seats, and more.

Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Alumni Association’s mentoring and scholarship programs as well as the Tiles for Teachers project to honor retired Mira Costa teachers. Raffle tickets are available at the event and on-line at mbxfoundation.org.

This year’s talent includes singer-songwriter, Zacc West, a 2007 Mira Costa graduate; Truckstop, featuring Mira Costa Principal Ben Dale; Flowbis, a funk-rock band made up entirely of Mira Costa alumni; and Tub, featuring five Mira Costa seniors. The event will be emceed by VOXX DJs, a local business, owned and operated by Costa alum KC Campbell.

Mira Costa has a long tradition of producing great musical acts. From punk legends Black Flag, the Descendants, and Pennywise, to Grammy-winning jazz pianist David Benoit, to the country duo Sweethearts of the Rodeo, to rising pop band Bahari - Mira Costa graduates have been making great music for decades. The Costapalooza music festival pays tribute to this history and to the diversity of musical talent Mira Costa has produced.

Relocating the event to Mira Costa ties past alumni talent to today’s Mira Costa students and the greater South Bay community, said Mira Costa Alumni President Chris Warshaw. “The concert was such a success last year, we’re excited to build on that success by bringing the great legacy of Mira Costa music to the high school campus,”  he said.

Added MB/X Foundation executive director Jennifer Williams, “We are thrilled to join forces with the Alumni Association to bring this fun event to the current Mira Costa student and parent community. It’s a great opportunity to build school spirit and a bond with our alumni. We’re also excited to show the community the beautiful campus improvements, including the Mustang Mall.”

The music festival also provides an opportunity for the community to learn more about Measure C and Measure EE, bond measures on the November 8 ballot to improve Manhattan Beach schools, including renovating Mira Costa athletic facilities. During the event, tours will be provided of the existing 65-year old gym and the plans for building a new Athletics Education Complex.
