MBMS Red Cross Youth Club Seeks To Help Others

Oct 03, 2017 09:03AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
In a time of great need across the country, a group of Manhattan Beach MIddle School students has been inspired to band together to help others: The newly formed MBMS Red Cross Youth Club has raised $19,000 from individual donations since the beginning of the school year.

“I wanted to help people in danger of hurricanes and earthquakes," said James Walker, an eighth grader who serves as president of the club.

The club was formed just as Hurricane Harvey began its devastation of South Texas. It currently has approximately 30 members - made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders - with membership growing each week.

"We have been meeting frequently, sometimes twice a week with all the natural disasters this month," said Michael Tyler, the club's social media co-chair.

The group is set to appear at this weekend's Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair, sharing a booth with CERT near the Joslyn Community Center.

At the booth, students will share information about emergency preparedness and take donations for the Red Cross. They will also be handing out American Red Cross yo-yos and magnets.
