Community STEM Night Has Something For Everyone

Mira Costa High School's 2nd Annual Community STEM Night is expected to be bigger and better than ever - and it promises a little something for everyone.
The event, which will be held on Wednesday, February 12th from
5-8pm at the Manhattan Beach MIddle School, will feature a range of interactive projects, talks, and demos for guests of all ages. It is free and open to the public.
Attendees can expect to see more than 50 booths hosted by local companies, courses, colleges, and clubs. Featured attractions include rocket models, driveable robots, radio balloon launches, solar boats and remote controlled vehicles to innovations in plant science, virtual/augmented reality, math/LEGO/straw rocket and tower building challenges, cybersecurity illustrations, chemistry demos, biotech showcases, gaming and fitness apps, wearable technologies, and more.
Scheduled speakers include:
- Christina Agnew – a rocket launch specialist who was previously executive officer, Space Superiority Systems Directorate, US Air Force
- Dr. David Meyer – CEO of the Lundquist Institute (previously known as LA BioMed), the pre-eminent biotech research organization in Los Angeles and one of the top in the US.
- Danny Olivas – NASA astronaut (two shuttle missions to the International Space Station), who is a Costa parent.
- Daniel Saei – designs engineer at Chevron
- Gregg Weaver – co-founder of Amped Technologies, a software development company focusing on mobile applications health & wellness
According to Leanne Weaver, technology and engineering lead at Mira Costa, the event aims to enhance students' and the local community's
understanding of STEM fields and opportunities, to inspire career paths,
and to showcase Costa's STEM offerings.
Parents who work in or are connected to the STEM field and are interested in hosting a booth at
this year’s STEM night are welcome to participate. Previous booths have included some of the
following:

- Handouts/booklets about company/STEM
- Information about STEM related careers and programs or opportunities for students (e.g. internships, volunteer opportunities, student/family tours)
- Highlights of recent STEM advances/innovations as well as new projects/challenges
- Devices/equipment/research related to their work that they can bring to show students
- Hands-on interactive exhibits or demos
- Corporate promotional items/giveaways (e.g., pens, keychains, bookmarks, etc.)
