A Juneteenth celebration at Bruce's Beach Park on Saturday brought out a crowd of hundreds for food, music, dancing, and organizing.

"The crowd was so diverse and of all ages," co-organizer and local activist Ally Hales told Manhattan Beach News. "It was a proud moment to see so many beautiful people enjoying the day and filled with joy and celebration."

The Juneteenth event was significant because it marked the one-year anniversary of the launch of the Justice for Bruce's Beach movement to make amends or reparations to the Bruce family for the taking of its beachfront property where the family owned a successful seaside resort.

The event featured speakers including Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who has led an effort to return the county-owned beachfront parcel of land once owned by Willa and Charles Bruce back to the Bruce family descendants.

A Color of Change booth at Saturday's event also gave attendees an opportunity to sign up for further information and action.

"Today we’re going to celebrate, but tomorrow we’re going to get back to work," Justice for Bruce's Beach founder Kavon Ward told the crowd.
