Health Department Issues Advisory for Manhattan Beach, L.A. County Beaches

Nov 03, 2022 09:38AM ● By Jeanne Fratello

A rain advisory has been issued for beaches in Manhattan Beach - and all of L.A. County - warning of potentially unsafe water conditions.

The L.A. County Department of Public Health has issued the advisory for those visiting Los Angeles County beaches to be careful of swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters due to possible contamination caused by storm drain discharge.

The advisory was issued following rain that fell in the early morning hours of November 2.

A rain advisory is issued when there is significant rainfall that may cause bacteria levels in ocean waters to increase. Bacteria levels can increase significantly during and after rainstorms, as contaminants within the runoff enters the ocean. Bacteria levels may remain elevated up to 3 days depending upon the intensity of the rain and the volume of runoff. Elevated bacteria levels in ocean water may cause illness, especially in children and the elderly.

The Department of Public Health recommends that beach users avoid contact with ocean water for a period of 3 days after significant rainfall, especially near flowing storm drains, creeks and rivers.

The advisory applies to all L.A. County beaches will last until Saturday, November 5, at 7:30 a.m.

(Note that an advisory is different from a beach closure. A beach closure is declared when a sewage spill has impacted ocean waters or when a significant potential health hazard has occurred or is suspected to have occurred.)

Recorded information on beach conditions is available 24 hours a day on the county's beach closure hotline: 1-800-525-5662. Information is also available online at https://PublicHealth.LACounty.gov/Beach/.
