Jun 04, 2023 08:28AM ● By Jeanne Fratello

The Dodgers were crowned champions in Manhattan Beach LIttle League's Majors (ages 11-12) division on Saturday.

The Manhattan Beach Little League capped off its season on Saturday with championship games for its 12-and-under kid-pitch teams.

The league crowned champions in its AA, AAA, and Majors divisions, delivering trophies to the first and second place teams in each division.

The championship games marked the end of what had been a touch-and-go season, with significant disruption throughout the rainy season. (At one point the rains had completely submerged Premier Field at Polliwog Park.)

Nevertheless, "This finally felt like the first real season, post-COVID," said Manhattan Beach Little League President Andrew Shevin.

Dodgers Take Majors Division

In the Majors division (ages 11-12), the Dodgers came out on top with a 4-3 victory over the Tigers.

Dodgers coach Sunil Saxena said that the team was a true underdog coming into the championships, having won just three games all season - but that the players lived up to the challenge.

"The speech I gave to the kids at the beginning of the playoffs, and again today was, 'In life when the chips are down, and when no one believes in you, you've got to believe in yourself,'" Saxena told MB News. "We were the team that no one thought would do anything in the playoffs. Everyone thought we would just lose two games and be done. We ended up upsetting teams, we played the best team baseball I've ever seen them play, and the kids met the moment."

A's Win AAA Championship

In the AAA division (ages 10-11), the A's - also seen as underdogs - celebrated a 7-5 victory over the Mets to win the championship.

"I'm proud of you, you worked hard, you improved, and that's the most important thing," A's coach April Levy told the team as she handed out trophies.

The team was working at a deficit going into the championships because their main pitcher had broken his pinky finger.

"We were total underdogs," Levy told MB News after the championship. "We were not winning at the beginning of the season. But we kept practicing, and all of the kids were really supportive teammates to each other. I think that's what put us over the top."

White Sox Claim AA Championship

In the AA division (ages 8-9), the White Sox won a dramatic and hard-fought 16-15 victory over the Dodgers.

White Sox coach Mickey Maher told MB News that the team had spent the season improving, culminating in Saturday's victory.

"This was a bunch of talented kids who significantly improved over the course of the season and brought it all together at the right time," he said.

The games marked the end of the regular season, which began in February. All-Star teams will begin playing in mid-June.
