Will the hurricane affect the AVP Gold Series Manhattan Beach Open?

As of Saturday, the AVP had made some adjustments in the hopes of avoiding the brunt of the storm.

The AVP added two men's matches on Saturday night, with the winners of those matches advancing to the semifinals and the losers taking fifth place.

According to a statement from AVP:

Sunday's play will begin with two women’s matches at 7 a.m., with the winners of those matches advancing to the semifinals and the losers taking fifth place.

The men’s semifinals will follow, and then the women’s semifinals. The men’s final is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday, with the women’s final immediately following. All times are subject to change.

Matches will be played in the rain, as long as conditions remain safe.

(It should be noted that conditions and schedules may change at any time.)

Saturday Manhattan Beach Open Results

South Bay native Zana Muno and Deahna Kraft secured a spot in Sunday's semifinals, after back-to-back straight set sweeps Saturday over Chloe Loreen/Natalie Robinson (23-21, 21-17) and Toni Rodriguez/Savvy Simo (21-13, 22-20).

"We’re just happy to be here, and we’re really proud of each other," said Muno. "It’s been a work in progress, and we’ve been so close but haven’t been able to close it out. I feel like this week things are clicking, and we’re having a lot of fun. To be in the semis on home sand is pretty amazing.”

Third-seeded Megan Kraft and Emily Stockman have also captured an AVP season best finish and semifinals berth after toppling 11th-seeded Kimberly Hildreth/Teegan Van Gunst, 16-21, 21-13, 15-7, and Hermosa Beach Open champions Corinne Quiggle/Sarah Schermerhorn, 21-13, 22-20.

Top-seeded men Theo Brunner and Trevor Crabb remain unscathed after day two of the Manhattan Beach Open. After opening the morning with a 21-16, 19-21, 15-11 defeat over Brazilian Olympian Alison Cerutti and Billy Allen, they emerged victorious over Taylor Crabb and Taylor Sander, 21-17, 16-21, 23-21, in a “Crabb Boil” that pitted brother versus brother. Brunner now stands one day short of securing his first plaque on the Manhattan Beach Pier, while Crabb stands one day short of joining the ranks of Mike Bright, Mike O’Hara, Mike Dodd, Tim Hovland, and Karch Kiraly as the only male player in history to win the AVP Manhattan Beach Open at least four times in a row.

Hagen Smith, son of beach volleyball legend and four-time Manhattan Beach Open champion Sinjin Smith (1979, 1980, 1986 and 1989) is two wins away from having his name immortalized in beach volleyball history with his father on the Manhattan Beach Pier Walk of Fame. The pair would be the first father-son duo and blood relatives to have their names etched on the pier. Smith and Logan Webber beat Tri Bourne/Chaim Schalk, the #2 seed, 21-16, 15-21, 15-13, and Phil Dalhausser/Avery Drost, the #6 seed, 21-18, 21-19.

Fourth-seeded Taylor Crabb/Taylor Sander and 12th-seeded Cody Caldwell/Seain Cook emerged from the contenders' bracket into Sunday’s semifinals after extended play Saturday.

Live brackets for both the women’s and men’s competitions can be viewed here and will be updated in real time through each day of play.
