Mira Costa Athletes Honored On National Signing Day

Twenty-four Mira Costa student athletes celebrated National Signing Day on Wednesday, announcing their college commitments for their respective sports.

National Signing Day is the day that high school athletes traditionally announce their commitments to play all Division 1 and Division 2 sports outside of football or basketball. (The signing period continues through August 1.)


Below are the student commitments and their bios, courtesy of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. 

Jett Bathurst will be attending Loyola Chicago and competing for the men’s volleyball team. Jett has been competing for Mira Costa for four years and has been a varsity setter since his junior year. He is also a four-year scholar athlete. Jett plays club volleyball for Rockstar. He thanks his family, friends, and coaches for their support throughout the years. Go Ramblers!

Sydney Bushman will be attending UC Davis next fall to play on the women’s soccer team. She has been on the Costa girls soccer team since freshman year, achieving success and playing with some of her best friends. A favorite highlight from Costa soccer was beating Redondo in double overtime in the finals of the South Tournament last year. She currently plays for the SoCal Blues ECNL team. She thanks her parents for traveling all over the country to watch her play and her dad for driving her to Irvine 2-3 times a week for three years. Sydney also thanks her coaches, teammates and friends for their constant support and encouragement allowing her to develop into the player she is today. Sydney can not wait to continue her athletic career at UC Davis. Go Ags!

Zach Chapin will be attending Pepperdine University and competing for the Waves Mens Volleyball team. Zach has been a member of the Mira Costa varsity volleyball team since his sophomore year while also playing basketball his freshman and sophomore year. He plays Libero on the volleyball team, while also being utilized as a serving specialist his freshman year. Zach has also been a proud scholar athlete since his freshman year. Currently, he plays club volleyball for Team Rockstar Volleyball Club. Zach would like to thank his family, friends, and coaches for all their support throughout the years! He can’t wait to continue his volleyball career next year. Go Waves!

McKenna Collins is committed to play volleyball at Bryant University. After developing her passion for volleyball at age twelve, McKenna is currently playing with the club team Mizuno Long Beach. She has been a scholar-athlete for two years and an honor roll student for three. McKenna would like to express her gratitude to her parents for their unwavering support and to all the coaches who have helped her succeed along the way.

Mia Crisera will be attending Stanford University next fall and is excited to be joining their soccer team. Mia began playing on the Mira Costa varsity soccer team as a sophomore. She is a center midfielder for the Beach ECNL club team and was named to the ECNL southwest all-conference 1st team for the past two years. Mia is a dual-sport athlete and has been on the Costa varsity swim team since her freshman year. She is a scholar athlete, national merit commended student and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Mia is grateful for the support and encouragement of her family and all of her coaches including Amanda and Shannon Cross. Her experiences with the soccer team are some of her fondest Costa memories. Mia is excited to further her academic and athletic interests at her dream school, Stanford University. Go Card!

Johnny Dykstra will be attending the University of Southern California and competing for the Trojan's indoor volleyball team next year. He has been a member of the Mira Costa varsity volleyball team since his sophomore year and won the Boys Beach Volleyball IBVL Tournament of Champions in his senior year. Johnny has been an honor roll student since his freshman year. Currently, he plays club volleyball for MB Surf and was named 1st Team All-American team as a junior. Johnny would like to thank his family, friends, and coaches for all their support throughout the years. He can't wait to continue his volleyball career at USC next year. Go Trojans!

Charlie Fuerbringer will be attending the University of Wisconsin and playing volleyball for the Badgers. She is a member of the Mira Costa varsity volleyball team and a 2- year Bay League MVP. Charlie is a setter but can attack when needed. She played for Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club, winning two gold medals and looking for a third this year. Charlie would like to thank her Mira Costa coaches Cam and Nancy as well as all of her Mizuno Coaches Carlos, Tiffany, Libby, Lance, Lee, Debbie Green, and Javi. She also would like to thank her friends and family for all their support throughout the years. She cannot wait to continue her volleyball career at the University of Wisconsin. Go Badgers!

Chloe Hynes will be attending New York University and competing for the Violets volleyball team. Chloe is a current captain and a member of the Mira Costa varsity volleyball team since her sophomore year. She has also played beach volleyball for four years, winning the inaugural CIF-SS championship her junior year. She has played almost every position for Costa, playing right side this season. Chloe is also a proud four-year scholar-athlete. She plays club volleyball for Southern California Volleyball Club (SCVC) where she won the USA Volleyball National Championship this past July. Chloe thanks her parents and brother, Declan, for their endless support and motivation, as well as all of the coaches, parents, and players in the Costa volleyball program. She can't wait to continue her volleyball career at NYU next year. Go Violets!

Matthew Krause will be attending UC Irvine pitching for the Anteaters. Matthew has been a member of the Mira Costa varsity baseball team since his junior year while also earning MVP his freshman and sophomore year. Matthew is a right handed pitcher. He has also been a scholar athlete since his sophomore year. Matthew would like to thank his family, friends, and coaches for all their support throughout the years. Go Eaters!

Savanna Lau will be attending UC Berkeley and competing for the Cal beach volleyball team. Savanna started attending Mira Costa her junior year after moving from Northern California. She plays club for Elite Beach Volleyball and has been playing for the Mira Costa varsity beach volleyball team since she transferred. Savanna would like to thank her family, friends, and coaches for the amazing opportunities and support that they have provided. She's excited to continue her beach volleyball career at UC Berkeley next year. Go Bears!

Giselle Lau will be attending UC Berkeley next year and competing on the beach volleyball team. She currently plays on Mira Costa’s varsity beach volleyball team. She would like to thank her family and coaches for all the support they have given her until now. She is excited to continue her next few years with the team at Berkeley. Go Bears!

Hayden Lin will be attending Claremont McKenna College and competing for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team. She has been a member of the Mira Costa varsity volleyball team since her sophomore year, fulfilling the roles of both a setter and DS. She currently plays club volleyball for Southern California Volleyball Club where they won the 17 Open National Championship in July. Hayden has also competed on the Varsity basketball team for 4 years and has the honor of serving as team captain her senior season. She is a proud scholar athlete and member of the Principal’s Honor Roll. Hayden would like to thank her family, friends, and coaches for all their support throughout the years! A special thank you to Coach Cam Green and Coach Jeff Herdman for supporting her passions! She is excited to continue her volleyball career with CMS next year. Go Athenas!

Victor Loiola will be attending Cal State University Long Beach and competing for the Long Beach indoor volleyball team next year. He has been a member of Mira Costa varsity volleyball team since his freshman year. During his time at Costa, he has won Division I CIF and State Finals. Currently, Victor plays club volleyball for MB Surf and set a record for the US, placing 4th at U19 World Championships in Argentina. Victor would like to thank his parents, friends, family, and coaches for their support throughout his high school years. He is excited to join the Long Beach State volleyball team next year.

Maximo Martinez will be attending the University of Southern California to play baseball. Maximo has been a shortstop and pitcher for Mira Costa varsity baseball since sophomore year. He has worked hard to achieve his goals and is proud of how far he has come. He wants to thank his family, friends and coaches for their help throughout his journey. Fight on!

Trixie McMillian will be attending the University of Michigan and competing with the Wolverines volleyball team. She has been a part of the Costa varsity team for the two years that she has been here and a scholar athlete for all four years. Trixie plays for City Volleyball Club. Trixie would like to thank her family, friends, and her coaches for all the years of support. She's fired up to compete at the next level. Go Blue!

Jillian Rodrigues will be attending Colorado Mesa University and competing on the women's lacrosse team. She has played varsity lacrosse at Mira Costa since her freshman year and participated on the inaugural flag football team her senior year. Along with being on the Mira Costa Lacrosse team, she plays club lacrosse for Los Angeles Select, and has been on the All American West team for the past two years. Jillian would like to thank her teammates for their support and making lacrosse fun, her coaches for their encouragement and training, and her sisters for introducing her to lacrosse. She is thankful to her parents for traveling to games, spending long weekends and hot summers supporting her on the field. She is excited to continue her lacrosse career next year at CMU. Go Mavs!

Bryn Shankle will be attending Texas Christian University and will be playing Division 1 indoor volleyball as a middle blocker. Bryn has played on Mira Costa’s varsity volleyball team since her sophomore year. She currently plays for Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club and has been playing there since she was twelve years old. She would like to give a huge thank you to every single coach and player at Mira Costa and Mizuno Long Beach for their unconditional support and dedication to her growth as a player. Bryn is beyond excited to represent TCU next year and compete at the highest collegiate level against some of the best teams in the nation. Go Frogs!

Kendal Steller will be attending UC Davis and competing on the beach volleyball team. Kendal has been a member of the Mira Costa varsity beach volleyball team since her junior year and played her freshman and sophomore years on varsity at Mater Dei before transferring. She currently plays club beach volleyball for Elite Beach Volleyball Club. With her family, coaches, friends, and teammates by her side, she's excited to bring her skills to the UC Davis team. Go Aggies!

Emmersyn Stoddard will be attending Arizona State University where she will play for the Sun Devils ACHA Division 1 Women’s Ice Hockey Team and pursue a business degree in sports management. She is proud to be one of the few females on the Mira Costa ice hockey team. Emmersyn’s love for sports has been wide ranging but ultimately, a sheet of ice is where she found her true passion. She played for the Mira Costa girls golf team and has been the manager for the Mira Costa varsity football team since her freshman year. She is a 4-year scholar-athlete and a two-year Pacific District Select Women’s Ice Hockey candidate. Emmersyn currently plays for the Anaheim Lady Ducks U19 Triple A team. She wants to thank her parents, friends and siblings for their love and support, for dedicating thousands of hours to hockey and using their air miles to fly her to Canada twice a month. Ice hockey on the West coast is no easy task, and she thanks her coaches who have made it possible for her to continue her career at ASU. Forks up!

Ace Tendale will be attending the University of California Riverside to play Division 1 soccer. He has been a member of Beach FC for many years and has played for Mira Costa varsity since his junior year. He plays left back, center back, and left wing. Ace would like to thank his family, teammates, and coaches for helping support his soccer career throughout the years. He can’t wait to continue playing soccer at UCR. Go Highlanders!

Reese Thai-Sandoval will be joining the Division 1 UC Davis beach volleyball team. Reese has attended Mira Costa since her sophomore year, and has loved the community. She is a hard worker and very passionate about the sport. She currently represents MBS Beach Volleyball club and Salava Volleyball. One of her favorite parts about beach volleyball is that she gets to play at her favorite place everyday-- the beach! Reese wants to thank her dad for everything he has done, her supportive coaches, her friends and family, and everyone that has helped her along the way. She is so excited to play at the next level and attend UC Davis. Go Aggies!

Wilson Tunila will be attending Georgetown University and competing for their swim team. He has been a four-year varsity member of Mira Costa swim team and a two-year varsity member of the water polo team. He is a distance freestyler. Wilson was Bay League champion in the 500 free his junior year, a CIF finalist in the 500 free and on Costa’s CIF relay team. Wilson has also been a scholar athlete since his freshman year. This December, he will be competing for his club team in the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals. He thanks his family, friends, teammates and coaches at Mira Costa and his club team, Swim Torrance. Wilson is looking forward to his senior swim season this spring and continuing his athletic career at Georgetown. Hoya Saxa!

Nora Williams will further her academic career and play Division 1 volleyball at the University of California Riverside. Nora has been a four year varsity volleyball player and transferred to Mira Costa High School her junior year. Nora will begin her last club season in December on Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club team. She would like to thank her high school coaches and teammates for a great experience at Mira Costa. This milestone realizes a dream and she gives HUGE thanks to Coach Joy Fuerbringer and the rest of her Mizuno family for helping her reach her goal. Special thanks to her amazing parents who have supported her endlessly throughout this journey. Nora is so excited to start her next journey at UC Riverside. Go Highlanders!

Avana Zenner will be attending Boston College to major in psychology and compete in track for the Eagles. She started running track for Mira Costa as a freshman and became a hurdler midway through her Sophomore year using her speed and technical form to thrive in this event. Avana was named girls varsity MVP as a sophomore and junior and has the 2nd fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles and 3rd-best time in the 300 hurdles in Costa history.  Avana thanks her dad and mom for their positivity and never ending support on and off the track. She feels blessed to have amazing parents and siblings who are great mentors and keep her humble. Avana is grateful for Coach Kelvan Gamble’s expertise and elite training. It allowed her to reach her athletic potential and achieve her goal of competing for an elite school in a Power 5 Conference.
