This weekend features (at least) two notable local sporting events in Manhattan Beach.

Saturday and Sunday at Manhattan Heights, locals will be working off that extra stuffing and pie at the 3rd Annual Pickleball Turkey Tournament.

The tourney is open to anyone 18 and over. Saturday is devoted to men's and women's doubles, while Sunday will feature mixed doubles. Each day's round-robin tourney will crown 1st through 3rd-place winners in various divisions. Even if you're not playing, drop by to cheer on your friends and neighbors! (It's free.)

For more, see the city's info page about the tourney. (Registration is full; but if you are looking for stuff like this with enough advance time to join, watch the MB News calendar! This event was listed for a while!)

Saturday evening, the Mira Costa football team hosts a CIF Southern Section playoff final versus Simi Valley at 7PM at Waller Stadium.

Tickets are available online here. PLEASE NOTE: All patrons must enter through the gate at track level on Peck Avenue (by the new scoreboard) due to construction on Stadium Way. We're going to say it: Expect lines and a bit of a mess at the new, temporary entry.

The Costa team put itself in a deep hole early in the season, going 0-7 against a series of tough opponents, many ranked. That makes the CIF final all the more dramatic as a turnabout.

Costa won its final three games at Santa Monica (28-21), at Peninsula (35-15) and home vs. Redondo (21-14) to get into the playoffs. The Mustangs then snagged a first-round, Division 6 playoff win at Yucaipa (28-13), a second-round win at home vs. Cypress (45-27) and made the final by beating Murrieta Mesa 34-24.

If (when!) Costa wins on Saturday night, it will be their first CIF title for a decade.

Worth noting: Costa's JV team finished its regular season 7-3 and won the Bay League title.
