UPDATE: The pier is now open again. But still, be careful out there and the other warnings still hold.

Due to high winds and potentially dangerous surf conditions, the Manhattan Beach Pier has been closed through December 31.

The National Weather Service Los Angeles has announced that San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles County coasts are under coastal flood and high surf warnings through Saturday (although note that the Manhattan Beach Pier is closed through Sunday). The NWS LA warned of dangerous surf, severe rip currents, beach/roadway/lot flooding, and erosion up and down the coast.

The LA County Lifeguards warned surfers to know their abilities and limits, and always to check in with a lifeguard before going in the water. Anyone going in the water should know the universal help sign, which is a broad one-handed overhead wave. Those who want to observe the waves from the sand should plan to stay a significant distance away from the water’s edge.

Spectators are also warned to stay off rocks and jetties near the water's edge and to be wary of "sneaker" waves - large waves that appear out of nowhere; and never to turn one's back to the ocean.
