A GoFundMe has been created for Nico "Andrei" Gianan, who was fatally shot in an early morning assault on New Year's Day in Manhattan Beach.

The fundraiser, created by his sister Nina, will will be used to support Gianan's funeral expenses and related costs.

Gianan was shot in the early morning hours of New Year's Day at the intersection of 11th and Peck Ave. in Manhattan Beach.

He was brought to the hospital with "life-threatening" wounds to the head. Doctors determined that there was no chance of recovery because of the severity of his head injury that cut through his brain stem, according to his sister.

"This was a total, senseless act of violence and he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time," Nina Gianan wrote on the GoFundMe page. "The pain that this has left us is unimaginable."

Nina remembered her brother as Nico for "his infectious smile, his goofy personality, and his big heart" and for his "easygoing personality that everyone loves."

"He could make the whole room laugh and was a joy to be with," she wrote. "He leaves behind countless family members and friends who dearly miss him."

The family chose to honor his life by donating his organs in support of others.

Case Has Moved to Homicide Bureau

According to Manhattan Beach Police Department, MBPD officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of 11th Street at 1:23 a.m. on January 1 following reports of a shooting.

MBPD officers located Gianan suffering from a gunshot wound, down on the street. He was transported to Harbor General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later succumbed to those injuries.

According to MBPD, this was not believed to be a random attack, although police are still investigating.

Following Gianan's death, the investigation has been taken over by the L.A. County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau. Anyone with information is asked to call the Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. To make an anonymous tip, call LA Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or lacrimestoppers.org.
