The Mira Costa High School boys' water polo team is turning "pink" - that is, donning bright pink Speedos - in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The team debuted its new look on Wednesday, and will continue to wear the suits throughout October. The pink suits are designed to bring attention to breast cancer awareness and the team's fundraiser in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Contributions can be made to the team's fund raising page here. The team is also accepting donations at the water polo snack stand at Mira Costa's pool during home games.

"The whole idea is to create awareness and to get donations," said Susan Bremer-Rossow, president of the booster club for Mira Costa boys' water polo.  "Our goal is to get that one extra person to go in and get a mammogram, or that one extra dollar to go toward finding a cure."

Bremer-Rossow said that the idea originated with Lori Carter, a member of the booster club's executive board who is in charge of ordering all of the team gear. She had seen another team doing something similar last year, and raised the idea of trying it at Mira Costa. 

"It was almost universal - all of the boys wanted to do it," said Bremer-Rossow, who noted that almost all of them know someone who has been affected by cancer.

Bremer-Rossow added that when the team got together for a photo shoot with the pink suits, the boys were "really into it."

"This is just a really nice group of boys," she said.
