Last time Dustin Brown's Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup, the Manhattan Beach resident and Kings team captain let his young sons drink chocolate milk out of it.
This year, Kingsman Kyle Clifford placed his young one in it the night the Los Angeles Kings took the coveted Cup for a second time in the club's nearly 50-year history. And Kings players Alec Martinez and Justin Williams had fun with the Cup on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
The Cup's history is legendary. It is the only re-circulated championship trophy in pro sports, and each year the names of all of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff are engraved on its chalice. To keep the Stanley Cup at its current height, the oldest band inscribed with names is removed when the bottom band becomes full. The removed band is then preserved in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and a new blank band is added to the bottom.
In 1896, the Winnipeg Victorias started the mandate that the winning team drink champagne from the top bowl after winning the Stanley Cup. Players on the winning team each get a day with the Cup, though they are accompanied by at least one Hockey Hall of Fame representative who acts as a chaperone, safeguarding the Cup.
