The Mira Costa Jazz Band opened the Summer Concerts in the Park series Sunday, June 22.

Coming off a first place finish in the Advanced Big Band Division at the Riverside Jazz Festival in May, the Mira Costa Jazz Band entertained concertgoers in Polliwog Park Sunday night during the first Concert in the Park for 2014.

Under the direction of Joel Carlson, the 21-member band played tunes including "Over the Rainbow," made famous by Judy Garland, and "In the Stone," by Earth, Wind & Fire, said Darcy Driscoll of the MCHS Band Boosters.

Group members play either saxophone, trombone, trumpet, guitar, drums, or piano. Band members include, on: saxophone, Thomas Alexander, James Beck, Sam Kartub, Ben Sachs,  and Derek Zeoli; on trombone, Rebecca Bacich, Ryan Cosner, Daniel Popov, and Tommy Tomikawa; on trumpet, Ryan Braudo, Jules Gilliam, David Ryono, Everett Kim, and Ben Wu, and in the rhythm section on drums Clayton Caravaggio, on bass Tony Nguyen, on guitar Steven Padilla, on percussion Cole Riddle, on guitar, Will Riordan, on piano, Jon Sullivan, and on bass Adam Zaun.

The band's May victory was the first in MCHS Jazz band history in which the group achieved a score of 90 or higher, said Driscoll. They received a score of 90 and 94 from the adjudicators, she said.

The MCHS Music Department was awarded the 2014 GRAMMY® Foundation's Signature Schools Gold Award earlier this month. They were selected as one of the top three U.S. public school music departments in the country and will be awarded a $5,000 monetary grant to benefit the music program. The GRAMMY® Foundation's Signature Schools program recognizes top U.S. public high schools that are making an outstanding commitment to music education during an academic school year.

Of the 20,000 applications for the 2014 GRAMMY® Signature Schools award, 123 schools nationwide were selected as GRAMMY Signature Schools semifinalists and 12 GRAMMY® Signature Schools were awarded. The top three schools are designated Gold recipients.

Seniors who graduated Thursday played in the concert. They are Thomas Alexander, James Beck, Ryan Braudo, David Ryono, Tony Nguyen, and Steven Padilla.  (See story: Mira Costa Class of 2014 Graduates - 06/19/2014)
