Pet Safety: How to Handle Fourth of July Fireworks
Jul 03, 2014 02:13PM ● By Mb News StaffPets should not be taken to fireworks events nor should they be left outside since they could easily escape when fireworks trigger their "fight or flight" mechanism.
The loud booms and flashing fireworks that make humans "oooooo" and "awwww" on the Fourth of July can send pets scurrying and scrambling in a "fight or flight" reaction.
In fact, more pets are lost on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year.
Here are some tips, compliments of MBPD, to help you keep your pet(s) safe this Independence Day.
- Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Pets often seek out a small den-like place, such as a crate, if they are fearful or stressed. It is recommended to create that safe place and familiarize your pet with it before needed, to reduce stress during the fireworks. Consider leaving a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep them company.
- Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape, become lost, or become entangled.
- Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly.
