Nov 04, 2014 08:49PM ● By Mb News Staff

Last year's MBCC scholarship awardees: Kelly Sass, Nikos Villarreal Styles, Matthew Wenner, Madison Jett Miketa, Anthony Lee, and Emily Everhard.

Outstanding local students will be recognized by the Manhattan Beach Coordinating Council when the organization hosts its first community luncheon at The Belamar Hotel on November 20. Students from Manhattan Beach elementary schools, American Martyrs School, Manhattan Beach Middle School and Mira Costa High School are spotlighted for academic and community excellence.

The public is invited to attend. The luncheon costs is $35 per person, with proceeds going to support the organization's annual scholarship fund, which awarded $42,000 to 12 graduating Mira Costa seniors over the past two years.

“Community support is integral to the mission of the Manhattan Beach Coordinating Council,” said Stephanie Martin, MBCC president. “Our community sponsors are the lifeblood of our scholarship fund, which every year helps local high school students realize their dreams of college educations.  We hope to see you and your family November 20th at The Belamar Hotel.”

For the first time, this year's luncheons have been reformatted to include the recognition of elementary school students, said Martin. Luncheons also feature updates from local government and key community organizations, including the City of Manhattan Beach and the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The November 20th luncheon is the first of five set for the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Belamar Hotel is located at 3501 N. Sepulveda Blvd.; luncheon hours are from 11:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. Luncheon reservations should be made one week in advance by calling (310) 750-0300 or paying online via PayPal on the MBCC website. Cash or check will be accepted at the door but RSVPs are necessary.

Other luncheon dates are January 15, 2015; March 19, 2015, and April 16, 2015. The 2015 scholarship recipients will be announced May 21 during a special Blue Zones Project-themed reception (4-5:30 p.m.) hosted by Beach Cities Health District.

The MBCC’s mission is to establish a forum to promote networking, communication and information exchange among agencies, organizations and individuals, and to provide recognition to local students. The Council relies on sponsors for support, and there are five levels of community sponsorship available.
