Drink wine at 5 - it's good for your health, and a positive for the community. Old Venice restaurant is taking that principle to heart at 5 p.m. this Tuesday, as it offers a $5 glass of wine and $5 small plates in honor of its third anniversary as a Blue Zones-certified restaurant.

As a Blue Zones restaurant, Old Venice offers lighter and lower-calorie menu options for diners who are committing to a healthier lifestyle. Old Venice also participates in the BlueZonesPerks project, which offers 15 percent off the bill to diners who present the Blue Zones discount card at the restaurant.

Old Venice, a downtown landmark, has been open since 1984 in Manhattan Beach. The restaurant was completely rebuilt after a devastating fire in 2006.

The Beach Cities Blue Zones project is a community-based program aimed at creating healthier and more productive and engaged citizens. It uses permanent, evidence-based environmental and policy changes to motivate residents to adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles. It operates under the "Power 9" principles, one of which is "Wine @ 5" - drinking a glass of wine with friends at 5 p.m. to take advantage of the healthy plant compounds and antioxidants in wine, which has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease.

Old Venice restaurant is located at 1001 Manhattan Ave., Manhattan Beach, CA 90266. (310) 376-0242.
