Head downtown to catch the the fun sounds of the Hyperion Outfall Serenaders today (Saturday, Dec. 20) from 3:30 p.m. through early evening.
The group of locals, who have been playing since their founding in 1969, are a community favorite, bringing the spirited sounds of dixieland, ragtime and traditional jazz to audiences throughout the South Bay.
Leader and original founding member Bob White, a Manhattan Beach resident who plays the cornet and sings, told DigMB the seven-member group will gather in front of Vons downtown around 4 p.m. Saturday, and launch from there around, wandering the streets downtown, playing their signature music.
They plan to play outside restaurants with outdoor streetside eating areas, and will wind up at Ercole's and Shellback, Manhattan Beach's oldest bars and steadfast cultural icons, around 6 p.m. The Hyperion Outfall tradition of strolling the downtown streets the last weekend before Christmas began in 1970 when the group only had three members, said Bob.
As the City of Manhattan Beach's official band, so designated by then mayor Joan Dontanville, the group has become legendary, found playing at nearly every signature city event, from the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair to the Manhattan Beach 10K Run to the city's Veterans Day ceremony to the Downtown Manhattan Beach Holiday Open House and Pier Lighting and last Sunday's Holiday Fireworks Festival.
And if you think Manhattan Beach is the only community that loves the band, think again! Just last night, they played at a Christmas party at the Compton Airport, and they'll spend New Year's in Avalon, playing at El Galleon and Antonio's Cabaret. "It will be our 23rd New Year traveling to Catalina," said Bob.
For those in the know, the band's name has always been tongue-in-cheek, given that Hyperion is a City of Los Angeles waste treatment plant just north of Manhattan Beach city limits on the coast. You can imagine what the Outfall is.
Bob moved to MB in 1958, and formed the band with Dr. Sid Pattison and Dale Van Scoyk, in 1968. Over the years the band has had different members. Today, Bob is joined by Jack Freeman on the trombone, Fran Freeman on percussion, Jimmy Green on banjo, John Norton on tuba, Louis Pastor on drums, and Dave Stanton on clarinet.
