City Celebrates Newest Public Art Work
Feb 25, 2015 08:07AM ● By Mb News StaffLight Gate is the City of Manhattan Beach's newest public art work. It stands on Highland Avenue just outside city hall.
The evocative Light Gate, an interactive public art work, gets its official city ribbon cutting today (Wednesday, Feb. 25) from 4-6 p.m. The work has been installed just outside Manhattan Beach City Hall on Highland Avenue near the library.
Light Gate was selected by the cultural arts commission and city council as the Manhattan Beach Centennial Art piece. The city celebrated its centennial in 2012.
"The Light Gate pays homage to the Civic Center while it concurrently serves as a gateway, oculus and lens to the horizon; where the ocean meets the sky," wrote Cultural Arts Commissioner Peter DeMaria in the commissions' recommendation to City Council. "The idea that a work of art can perfectly capture and frame the sunset on a specific day each year, is quite overwhelming - much like the work of Leonardo DaVinci, it lies at the intersection of art, science and nature. This project is not only tied to the civic center and the horizon, but to the planets and solar system - this is a powerful gesture and one that gives this project an annual rebirth."
Designed by Mags Harries and Lajos Héder, the sun sets through Light Gate twice a year: January 27th and November 14th, making it a truly unique piece of art and perfect for a city by the sea.
