The public is invited to celebrate the completion of the modernization of the Mira Costa High School campus today (Tuesday, March 31) at 5:30 p.m. on campus in the new multi-purpose room.

The project's completion brings to fruition a new 57,000-square-foot award-winning Math/Science classroom building with state-of-the-art science labs; 44 completely modernized classrooms that include new orchestra and band rooms; a beautiful 300-seat small theater/multi-purpose room, and a new 90,000-square-foot university-caliber quad featuring a satellite cafeteria, seating areas and a gathering area large enough for all students.

In 2008, Manhattan Beach voters passed Measure BB, a $67.5 million bond to modernize the campus. The project has been completed on time with funds designated for campus improvement, said Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews and MBUSD School Board President Bill Fournell.

"We are so grateful to the community of Manhattan Beach for their support in providing such a beautiful space for the students and the community," said MCHS Principal Dr. Ben Dale of the new MPR/small theater, which was the final phase of the Measure BB project. 

The new state-of-the-art theater has retractable seating and will handle events that involve audiences up to 300. "The auditorium is booked over 300 days per year," said Dale. "A large percentage of the bookings are at far than less capacity, but every event is wear and tear on the larger facility. By having a beautiful small theater, we can manage the large number of small events and extend the life of the larger auditorium by reserving it for the big events."

"We are so proud of this work and how we have achieved it," said Matthews. "This project is a testament to the generosity, cohesiveness, and hard work of our community over the last ten years. It will serve our students well for decades to come."
