Manhattan Beach Little League/Girls Softball Week in Review: Playoffs Begin for Juniors, Majors, International Divisions

It's playoffs time for several Manhattan Beach Little League divisions, with games beginning Tuesday, May 5 in Juniors and Majors, and Wednesday, May 6 for International. Coast division playoffs begin Sunday, May 17.

All teams in a division holding playoffs (Juniors, Majors, International, and Coast divisions) participate regardless of their regular season record. Seeds have been determined and brackets for competition in Juniors, Majors, and International divisions are below:

MAJORS DIVISION

Huskies vs. Owls

The Huskies jumped out to an early lead against the Owls last Tuesday, ultimately snagging a 15-1 victory at Marine Center a week before all Majors teams head into the playoffs. The powerhouse Huskies scored nine runs in the first three innings and six more before the game was over.

Players who put the Huskies on the board early were Cole Brunner with an RBI triple, Landon Penney with an RBI single, Jack Kwon with a fielder's choice two-run single, Cooper Fritsch with an RBI single, Benjamin Franz with an RBI single, and Cole Brunner with an RBI single, all in the first inning.

Griffin Moore (shown in photo at right) hit a two-run home run in the top of the 5th inning to extend the lead. The Huskies had 13 hits in total.

Landon Penney (shown pitching in the photo below) allowed one run in three innings, striking out five, walking one, and giving up one hit.

The Huskies added four more runs in the top of the fourth. A single by David Chase ignited the offense, scoring Christian Penczar and Cole Brunner. Blake Hampton followed with a single, bringing home Landon and David.

Tigers vs. Huskies

On Saturday, April 25, the Tigers beat the Huskies 10-4 behind Steve Lietzow's home run blast into Polliwog pond. Christian Hunter and Mark Sowers each added 2 RBIs on doubles to the fence to add to the Tigers' run total.

Tigers vs. Bulldogs

Behind the outstanding pitching of Andrew Beserra, Ian Draves, and Lou Guerrero, the Tigers shut out the Bulldogs 5-0 on Tuesday night (April 14) at Dorsey field. The Tigers' pitchers' battery-mate, Christian Hunter, caught five innings and did not allow a runner to advance. The Tigers' total was almost all Jack Walter, who went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs.
