Junior Lifeguards from all over, including Manhattan Beach, North Hermosa, South Hermosa, El Segundo, and Redondo, took to the ocean Thursday in the program's annual session-ending Taplin Relays at Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey.

The Taplin races close out the first summer session of Jr. Lifeguards by bringing participants together to run, paddle, and swim in in a relay formatted competition. Teams from each beach program race against each other.

Three divisions compete: the "C" Division (ages 9-11), the "B" Division (ages 12-13), and the Boys/Girls "A" Divisions (ages 14-15).

Said an onlooker, "Ninety percent of the spectators have no clue who's winning or who has won," noting how participants receive the last place finisher "with a tunnel of love."

The Jr. Guard Program is offered to all boys and girls in Los Angeles County, and is designed to teach kids 9-17 beach and ocean skills. Instruction includes water safety, swimming, body surfing, surfing, physical conditioning, competition skills, first aid, lifesaving, rescue techniques, CPR and the use of professional lifesaving equipment.

The first day for the programs that just finished with Taplins on Thursday, July 23 began on Monday, June 22. The next program session begins on Monday, July 27 and finishes with Taplins on Saturday, August 22. Regular Jr. LifeguardG Program hours at their respective beaches are from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
