Manhattan Beach Little League All-Stars Play in Championship

A team of 11- and 12-year olds from Manhattan Beach Little League continue to tear up the baseball diamond in All-Stars competition. At 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, July 28), the team plays Sherman Oaks for the Sub Division championship at Homer Briggs Field in Ontario.

The boys defeated the same Sherman Oaks team 10-5 Sunday. Sherman Oaks then beat a team from Metro to advance to play MBLL again.

In Sunday's victory, Jonah Storey pitched 5-1/3 innings and hit two home runs. In relief, Cole Brunner secured the final two outs.  "We had balanced hitting throughout the lineup," said Coach Anthony Wall. The team had 12 hits in the game and some solid base running, he said.

"The difference in this game," said Wall, "was jumping out ahead early in the game, 8-3 at the end of three innings. Our boys played mentally tough throughout the game, never letting up against a very good Sherman Oaks team. Even though the score was in our favor, our boys played tough mentally as if the score was 0-0, playing with aggressiveness and a sense of urgency."

On Saturday, MBLL beat Glendora 9-7 in a back-and-forth game that was decided in the sixth inning. Glendora got on the board first, jumping ahead 2-0 in the first inning. After four innings, the score was tied 4-4.

Caden Garvey hit a two-run homer in the top of the 5th, scoring Jake Walk who'd gotten on base on a single. A feisty Glendora team rallied to tie the game 6-6 with two runs in the bottom of the 5th.

In the top of the 6th, Kyle Karros and Jonah Storey opened up the inning with infield hits. Andrew Beserra then homered to deep right, making the score 9-6. Andrew also pitched in the bottom of the 6th, shutting down a rally by Glendora who came up short at 9-7.

Said Wall, "The difference in this game was getting timely hits and the boys learning how to win from coming behind."
