City Wants Your Opinions on Signage

Sep 20, 2015 11:04AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Pier, beach, volleyball, surf, sunshine - There's no doubt that Manhattan Beach has character; now how should that character be expressed in the city's signage? City officials are considering three preliminary design options and are asking residents to weigh in on their favorites.

Three options on the table from Selbert Perkins Design include a "repurpose" concept with nautical blue/white signage and watercolor artwork; a vintage/retro concept with art deco travel poster style artwork; and a "modern" style with orange signage and high-end photography.

The purpose of the signage program is to create a civic identification and wayfinding system to define and direct residents and visitors using Manhattan Beach's public spaces.

The program also aims to reinforce the character and history of Manhattan Beach through storytelling; identify and eliminate sign clutter, confusion, and information gaps; and design a unified, flexible sign program that creates a consistent and unique image for Manhattan Beach.

Selbert Perkins found that among visitors to Manhattan Beach, the top destinations were the Manhattan Beach Pier (85%), the beach (80%), downtown (75%), restaurants (65%), and Manhattan Village Mall and Metlox Plaza (35%).

Top visitor needs included easy parking (75%) and clear directional signage (50%).

What do you think best expresses the character of Manhattan Beach? To view the three design options, see the Selbert Perkins report here. To take a brief survey on the signage options, visit the city identity survey page here.

Feedback on this issue is managed through the city's Open City Hall online forum.
