Mira Costa, MBMS Bands Join Together for 'Green and Gold Day'

Sep 26, 2015 09:57AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
With a spirited parade down Peck Avenue, the Mira Costa Marching Band and the Manhattan Beach Middle School bands joined forces on Friday night's football game at Waller Stadium. The bands came together as part of an annual Green and Gold Day tradition of musical mentorship and camaraderie.

The high school marching band members sat with their younger counterparts in the stands, and then led them down to the field for another performance at halftime.

"It's like when your older sibling takes you under their wing, welcoming you to the big band family," said Denise Haslop, band director at MBMS. "The kids are so pumped and this is how we want them to view band - not just as a class, but as a place for camaraderie, friendships, and fun."

Mira Costa Marching Band Director Joel Carlson said that his students enjoy the opportunity - and take it seriously as well. "I tell them that this is possibly the most important [session] of the year because this is the future of the band."

The Mira Costa Mustangs went on to defeat West High School, 28-26.
