What are the hot issues in public education, and how will they affect students and families in Manhattan Beach? Come and hear about these questions and more from your local legislators at the second annual "Meet Your Lawmakers" event on March 24.
The event, organized by the Manhattan Beach Council of PTAs, will feature an open discussion on issues in public education with California Senator Ben Allen and Assemblymember David Hadley. The panel will be moderated by The Beach Reporter's Paul Silva.
The event, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Mira Costa High School small theater, is free, but registration is required. Registration is available at EventBrite.
Topics to be discussed include Every Child Succeeds, Common Core implementation and funding, teacher shortages, public education funding in California, the Local Control Funding Formula, construction of school facilities, state support of teacher retirement funding, as well as the Vergara case in determining what teacher tenure and evaluation will look like.
Audience questions regarding education policies can be submitted along with your RSVP. On the night of the event, questions will also be collected from the audience until 6:15 p.m. Questions may be consolidated due to time constraints.
This year's event follows a successful inaugural event last year, which marked the first time that the PTA Council brought lawmakers to Manhattan Beach instead of making a legislative visit to Sacramento. Bringing legislators to Manhattan Beach allows more parents and residents to be involved and to give feedback, says Katie David, MB PTA legislative advocacy co-chair.
"Second to voting, showing up at a events like this is a way to make a difference - there is power in numbers," said David. "It also leads to more powerful lines of communication being made with our state representatives who create change on a statewide level."
Seating at the theater is limited to 300, so participants are encouraged to register early to ensure that they get a seat.
