Local AAUW Chapter Celebrates Young Scientists

Sep 03, 2016 11:52PM ● By Jeanne Fratello

Twenty area girls who are rising stars in science and math will be sharing their summer camp experiences with their mentors and sponsors at a Manhattan Beach gathering later this month.

The local Beach Cities Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will meet on September 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Manhattan Beach Community Church to honor the girls and hear about their participation in Tech Trek! summer science and math camps. The AAUW chapter sponsored the girls' attendance at the residential camps.

The gathering is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about the AAUW organization, the Tech Trek! math and science camp program, and the group's annual Author’s Luncheon, which is used to fund the camp scholarships.

This is the 18th year of the Beach Cities AAUW's science and math camp scholarship program. The AAUW branch works with science teachers from local middle schools (Prairie Vista, Bud Carson and Hawthorne in Hawthorne School District; Will Rogers and Jane Adams in Lawndale; and Dana Middle School in the Wiseburn school district) to identify girls who show an interest in science and math and who would not be able to attend such a camp without a scholarship.

The Tech Trek! camps are held on campus at UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and Whittier College. The girls stay for a week at the college campus and get exposure to both college life and careers in math and science.

Light refreshments will be served at the September 17 meeting. The suggested donation to attend is $5. Attendees are asked to RSVP before September 14 by contacting President Dayla Sims or by calling (310) 944-5286.

The AAUW is a national organization that has been empowering women in advanced studies since 1881. The organization's mission, “Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research,” has been a driving force behind the local Beach Cities branch since its formation in 1953.
