A GoFundMe page has been established to help with hospital and funeral costs for Sandro McIlroy, 16, who passed away following a skateboard accident in Palos Verdes Estates on Friday.
McIlroy, of Manhattan Beach, was a Mira Costa student who had graduated from Manhattan Beach Middle School and Pennekamp Elementary School.
"Sandro was a loving, adventurous boy who lived for surfing. The ocean was his favorite place, he was a great son and friend to everyone around him, he never failed to make anyone smile, he was a light in the darkness, and we miss him so much," wrote friends who organized the fundraising page.
At press time, the fundraising effort had collected more than $17,000 toward a $20,000 goal.
In an email to all MBUSD families regarding the tragedy, MBUSD Superintendent Mike Matthews noted that counselors would be available at Mira Costa on Tuesday when students return from spring break.
