Walk, Race, and Party This Weekend in Manhattan Beach

Oct 26, 2017 09:52AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Look no further than Manhattan Beach, where a weekend chock-full of fun for all ages will be capped off with a massive fundraising walk and a pumpkin race.

First, on Friday night, the Older Adults Program is hosting a Halloween party from noon to 5:00 p.m. Come and meet other older adults in the community, and enjoy treats, popcorn, and more. Costumes are highly recommended and a prize will be given to the best dressed. The movie for this event will be Ghost Busters.

Next, kick off your weekend with a little healthy clean-up. The Manhattan Beach Police Department's Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is on Saturday, October 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The MBPD and the Drug Enforcement Administration are partnering to give the community an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Medications (pills or patches) will be accepted for disposal at the Manhattan Beach Police Department (Community Room, 420 15th Street, Manhattan Beach).  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

On Saturday night from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., Baja Sharkeez will transform into "CarnEvil" with a twisted carnival atmosphere. There will be giveaways all night, and a costume contest at 11:00 p.m. with top prizes of $100 plus $300 bottle service credit. Reservations are required; call (310) 265-3386.

On Sunday, at 9:00 a.m., lace up those walking shoes and head down to the Manhattan Beach Pier for the 9th annual Skechers Friendship Walk to benefit kids and local education foundations. The walk is produced by Skechers and co-produced by The Friendship Foundation, a local nonprofit organization that helps children with special needs through social and recreational activities at home, school, and in the community.

The walk, billed as the biggest fundraising event in California, raised a record $1.6 million last year, and has already raised more than $1.62 million this year.

Starting at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, dress up your little ghosts and goblins and enjoy the Downtown Manhattan Beach Safe Trick-or-Treat. Look for the orange flyer in the window of participating businesses. The fun lasts until the candy runs out!

At noon on Sunday, the 27th annual World Famous Pumpkin Race will begin. The World Famous Pumpkin Race is a unique side-by-side single elimination race featuring handcrafted, decorated pumpkin racers in a funky, hilarious, suspenseful, and dramatic display of American ingenuity. Excitement builds as pumpkin racers battle head-to-head for the coveted Pumpkin Race Championship Trophy. Pumpkin racers also compete for Best Design, Worst Crash, Most Adorable, Top Fundraisers, and more.

The pumpkin race was created in Manhattan Beach on Halloween Eve in 1990 by Karl Rogers, Michael Aaker and John Holliday. They invented the Pumpkin Racer design and developed the Pumpkin Race format for guests attending Karl's birthday party.

The race has since grown into a major city-wide event that attracts tens of thousands of people to Manhattan Beach and more than 100 similar races around the country.

For the second year in a row, the race will highlight Pumpkin Race to Make Autism Work in the South Bay fundraiser, which benefits the non-profit MBUSD CHOICE Booster Club. The MBUSD CHOICE Booster Club, a sub-organization of the MBX Foundation, supports the MBUSD CHOICE transition program - a program by the Manhattan Beach Unified School District to address long-term community needs for neurodiverse students. Through the fundraiser, pumpkin racers can form a team, join a team, or simply make a donation. Pumpkin race kits assembled by MBUSD CHOICE students are available for a donation of $25 or more to the fundraiser.
