Leadership Manhattan Beach Unveils Bike Fix-It Stations

Ever enjoyed a peaceful bike ride down the Strand, only to be slowed down by a flat tire? That won't be a problem anymore, thanks to the Leadership Manhattan Beach class of 2018. The local leadership group has just unveiled this year's class project, three bike fix-it stations to be stationed around town.
The stations feature a bicycle stand, pump, and eight commonly used tools. Users can also use their mobile devices to access how-to videos demonstrating a variety of common repairs.
"Our goal was to give not only our city, but also the South Bay and all of the people who visit our beach a place to fix their bikes," said Maggie Lippon, co-leader of the Leadership Manhattan Beach Class of 2018. "We want to encourage people to get out more and visit this beautiful city."
Lippon added that the fix-it stations were a fitting companion to the new bike routes, bike racks, and "sharrows" that are part of the South Bay Bicycle Master Plan. "This fits right in with that plan," she said.
Saturday's unveiling took place at the new bike fix-it station at the base of the Manhattan Beach Pier, adjacent to a row of new bike racks. A second station has already opened on the Strand at Rosecrans Ave., and Lippon noted that she was pleased to see that bikers were already using it.
A third station will be added at Manhattan Beach MIddle School, to aid bikers in East Manhattan Beach as well as middle school students biking to school.
The stations will be purchased by the Leadership Manhattan Beach Class of 2018, and donated to the city of Manhattan Beach and the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. The donation will include ongoing maintenance costs for the first five years, including tool replacement and air pump maintenance.
The project has been partially sponsored by a Beach Cities Health District grant and a Kinecta Federal Credit Union corporate donation.
Leadership Manhattan Beach was founded in 1992 to develop community leaders through a comprehensive nine-month program. It connects class members and various segments of the city and promotes high-level leadership skills. The culmination of the program is designing and implementing a class project directly benefiting the Manhattan Beach community.
