Black Flour Crepes to Launch 'Brunch at the Beach'

Hungry surfers, foodies, and families are in for a treat, starting this week: The popular Black Flour Crêpes truck will begin serving brunch every Sunday at Bruce's Beach.

In what is being called "Manhattan Beach's first French brunch on wheels," the truck will offer its trademark savory and sweet crêpes on Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 26th and Manhattan Ave.

The Black Flour Crêpes truck, run by Manhattan Beach residents Marie Ravel and Jamie Young, is a gourmet food truck that brings the traditional buckwheat crêpes of French Brittany to Los Angeles.

The savory crêpes are made with organic, naturally gluten-free buckwheat batter, combined with locally sourced ingredients. (Buckwheat is technically a seed, not a grain, so it is gluten-free.) 

"We wanted to introduce the 'real' crêpe to California," said Ravel. "The image of crêpes is poorly represented in this country. It's as if you went to France and the only hamburger represented was McDonald's."

A quick glance at the menu tells you right away that you're getting something a little different: A few of the crêpe choices include the "Skinny French Guy from Los Feliz" (French ham, cheese, and an egg); the "Hippy Girl from Topanga (smashed avocado, pickled radish, and sprouted grains); and the "Techie Kid from Playa Vista (Canadian bacon and eggs topped with Hollandaise sauce).

Of course there are dessert crêpes as well: The sweet, or dessert crêpes are made with organic wheat flour and egg batter, and topped with homemade items such as orange marmalade, sea salt caramel and Valrhona chocolate sauce. Filling out the menu will be coffee from local favorite Two Guns Espresso

Ravel (a native of France) and Young moved to California after having lived in Paris, where they started a gourmet pizza parlor (the first of its kind in Paris), and an authentic Southern barbecue restaurant (also the first of its kind in Paris). "We were doing things new there; now we're trying something new here," said Young. 

Ravel and Young had intended to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant, but after encountering difficulties finding a spot and a landlord willing to take a chance on a new restaurant, they found their food truck to be the perfect solution. Their food truck currently takes them to regular stops in Silverlake, on Melrose, and around Los Angeles for food truck stops or catering for special events. 

Manhattan Beach, however, is where Ravel and Young and their three kids call home. "We wanted the beach, some sun, and some culture," said Young. He called it "a gift" to their kids to live in the kind of place where they can ride bikes around safely or run into friends wherever they go in town. 

As for Sunday's kick-off brunch stop at Bruce's Beach, Young calls it "a good, healthy pre-meal for the Superbowl."

Savory crêpes will range from $10 to $15 and sweet crêpes from $5 to 7. There will also be a special deal for buying a pair of savory and sweet crêpes. 

Brunch at the beach "is a perfect Sunday morning for families and people doing their morning walk," Young said. "It'll be great to be in people's path."

Black Flour Crepes food truck will be at Bruce's Beach (26th and Manhattan Ave) every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can also catch the Black Flour Crepes team on the Cooking Channel's show Food Truck Nation (Episode 5, airing on February 5 at 9:00.).
