It was a stadium-sized crowd on Sunday night as Manhattan Beach rocked out to Queen music at a free concert at Polliwog Park.

The Queen tribute band known as Queen Nation drew a crowd of 12,500, according to Manhattan Beach Police estimates. (To put that number in context, it's more than a third of the population of the entire town.)

Martin Betz, cultural arts manager for the city of Manhattan Beach, described it as "one of our best attended concerts in recent memory."

Added Betz: "The fact that it was a big crowd and everyone had a good time speaks volumes about the community and city staff and public safety officers."

Attendees included Queen fans young and old. Many new Queen fans were no doubt drawn in by the successful 2018 film "Bohemian Rhapsody," for which actor Rami Malek won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of iconic lead singer Freddie Mercury.

The band played beloved classics such as "We Will Rock You," "We Are The Champions," "Another One Bites The Dust," "Bicycle Race," and "Under Pressure." As the band finished out with "Bohemian Rhapsody," the crowd erupted in a roar and sang along.

The free Sunday night concerts are a popular staple of summer weekends in Manhattan Beach. Families bring picnics and relax as kids play on the playground, while enthusiastic dancers of all ages join together in front of the stage.

The concert series, now in its 41st year, is run by the Manhattan Beach Department of Parks and Recreation, with One West Bank as the lead sponsor. The concerts will run through September 1. A full schedule is available here.
