It's been an exciting season for the Mira Costa Girl’s Water Polo team as they continue to rack up victories. The team is gearing up to compete in the Irvine So Cal Championship today and tomorrow, and preparing to face their arch-rivals next week.

As defending Bay League Champions and currently CIF ranked, the girls have played strong throughout the season.

"We are thrilled to have such a great group of girls, and a such a cohesive, talented team," said Patti Terry, president of the Costa Girls' Water Polo Booster Club. "Thanks to Coach Reichardt and everyone on the staff, it has been an amazing season."

Recently, they competed in the annual Coronado Tournament, placing 7th out of 32 teams. Last week, Costa handily beat Peninsula High School 16 - 8, and this week they also beat Palos Verdes 16-8. The varsity team is now 16-5 overall and 4-1 in the Bay League.

Led by team captains Leigh Lyter and Celeste Almendariz, the team has a strong core of experienced players. This year a record 15 senior girls will be graduating.

"Having 15 seniors is great. It shows how much they have put into the program and enjoy it," said Coach Jon Reichardt. "The seniors have been great leaders and players for everyone."

The Irvine SoCal Championship will put the girls up against several big Division 1 schools, starting with Long Beach Wilson today.

The last Bay League home game will take place on February 4 in a "grudge match" against Redondo. The girls lost to Redondo earlier this month, 9-7, and are hoping to avenge that loss at home.
