Customers Flock to Manhattan Beach Farmers' Market Re-Opening
May 12, 2020 04:25PM ● By Jeanne FratelloThe Manhattan Beach Farmers Market had a successful re-opening on Tuesday, May 12, with limited hours and tight social distancing requirements in place.
A series of signs and barricades directed customers to a central entry point at 13th and Morningside. As per its agreement with the city, the market allowed 35 customers in at a time, and customers were required to wear masks and maintain social distancing.
“I am thrilled with today’s successful market re-opening. The operation ran very smoothly; we had great cooperation with social distancing and face covering requirements; and people were very happy to be back outside in the sunshine, supporting their favorite farmers market vendors," said Jill Lamkin, executive director of the Downtown Manhattan Beach Business and Professionals Association, which sponsors the market.
One hangup in getting approval to re-open the market was having enough staff to manage the entrances and exits. The issue was resolved when community member Betsey Keely stepped up to organize volunteers.
"I’m grateful to our market manager Cynthia [Rogers], who did an amazing job putting the whole plan together, to Betsey [Keely] for stepping up to organize community volunteers, and to all of the volunteers who stepped up to help,” said Lamkin.
The market will continue to run on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a reduced number of vendors and no hot foods or entertainment, until further notice.
