Delays Expected on Vista Del Mar For Several Weeks
Apr 01, 2021 08:31PM ● By Mb News StaffThe city of Manhattan Beach is urging residents to avoid Vista del Mar and find alternate routes for their commutes in the next two to three weeks.
Beginning on Monday, April 5, 2021, the city of Los Angeles will
begin emergency slope stabilization work on Vista del Mar that will
require a 1.7-mile southbound lane closure for approximately two to
three weeks.
The lane closure will be located in the right, southbound lane of
Vista del Mar between Imperial Highway (south) and Waterview Street
(north) for 24 hours per day, Monday through Friday. No impacts will be
made to the northbound lanes.
The emergency work is needed due to erosion caused by rain that has
impacted the safety and stability of the roadway. At three sites,
erosion gullies have undermined the southbound right lane and locally
removed soils supporting the roadway resulting in an unsafe
condition.
Due to the unsafe condition, the City of Los Angeles Bureau
of Engineering recommended emergency repairs be performed as soon as
possible to restore support to the roadway and reduce erosion.
"This is not the City of L.A.'s 'Road Diet Part 2,'" said Manhattan Beach Councilmember Richard Montgomery in a social media post. "If it was, I would be calling John & Ken AM Radio KFI to kick L.A. in the teeth again!"
Four years ago, the city of Los Angeles closed down two out of four lanes on Vista del Mar as part of a "road diet" aimed at encouraging safety for motorists, cyclists, and beach-bound pedestrians; and to curb use of the street as a commuter thoroughfare. Those unannounced closures drew a sharp outcry across the South Bay, including Manhattan Beach. Within a matter of weeks, Los Angeles city officials reopened the lanes.
