Manhattan Beach Experts Sought for Speakers' Platform

May 12, 2021 08:47AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
What is your area of expertise? Would you be able to share your experience with high school or college students? If you have some specialized wisdom to share, a new speakers' platform created by a Manhattan Beach resident might just be the place for you to go.

Komal Shah Kapoor has created a free marketplace / online platform known as SpeakerPost that offers specialized guest lecturers to schools, universities, and more. The platform encourages people to donate their time to academia via volunteer guest lectures.

After just a few months online, she already has more than 300 experts registered in the forum, including industry professionals, educators, meeting planners and members of the media.

"The focus is on community volunteerism," said Kapoor. "This is my contribution to academia and to our future generations that care about hands-on experiences and about meeting successful people from their fields of interest."

Kapoor added that the speaker database is an unpaid venture, meaning that speakers do not get paid and she does not take any commissions. However, some educators or event planners may post paid opportunities on the site, but those payments would take place outside the portal, and Kapoor still takes no commissions.

Kapoor, who teaches communications and public relations part time at UCLA and Cal State Dominguez Hills, said she has been on a mission to make a difference in the lives of college students. She created the portal as a way of leveraging professional expertise to give students new perspectives and viewpoints.

After she created the portal, she determined that there was interest among high school teachers for their students as well.

For example, Kapoor now has two career counselors from Mira Costa High School connected with the portal. She said that the counselors were excited that they had a way to find experts in Manhattan Beach who could speak for school events.

"There's no limit to the benefit of having educators and professionals from different industry verticals and expertise who can share their wisdom with our students," she said.
