The Mira Costa High School boys' soccer team won the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section (CIF-SS) title for the first time on Friday night by defeating Loyola, 1-0, before a full crowd at Waller Stadium.
A goal by Ben Moglia early in the game was the lone goal in the hotly contested match. It capped off what has been described a "storybook season" for the boys' soccer team.
Earlier this month, the Mustangs upset No. 1-seeded L.A. Cathedral in the Southern Section Division 1 soccer playoffs.
The team has been invited to play in the CIF SoCal Regional Soccer Championships beginning on June 1.
Waller Stadium Filled to Capacity Limits
The boys played before a sold-out capacity crowd of more than 1,000 - marking one of the largest public events in Manhattan Beach since the beginning of the pandemic.
Spectators at Waller Stadium were divided into a "vaccinated" and "non-vaccinated" (more widely spaced apart) sections, and those who were vaccinated were asked to show proof at the door.
