Manhattan Beach Pier Renovation Project Moves Foward

Feb 02, 2022 11:53AM ● By Jeanne Fratello

Three proposed colors for the new railings for the Manhattan Beach Pier. Councilmembers expressed a preference for the left-most "seafoam green" sample.

The city of Manhattan Beach is moving forward with a pier railing replacement project for the Manhattan Beach Pier.

The project would replace and repaint the pier railings so that they are up to current code and the historic seafoam green color is preserved. Currently, the railings are corroded and the paint is peeling.

On Tuesday night, City Council approved an amendment to the project that would fund additional design services for the removal and replacement of the two existing timber staircases at the base of the pier. Councilmembers also examined three potential color samples for the railings.

The renovation effort is projected to begin by fall 2022 and to be completed by June 2023.

Pier Railing Replacement Project

Under the current plan, the railing replacements would be aluminum rather than steel, and there would be five horizontal rails rather than the current four. The rails would be installed in approximately 25-foot segments to allow for easy removal in case of the need for repairs.

The replacement is scheduled to take place in 50-foot segments at a time to allow the pier to remain open during construction.

As per the amendment to the project approved on Tuesday night, the two sets of wooden steps leading down to the sand would be replaced. The new timber used for the steps would be treated with "an appropriate marine environment/corrosion protection preservative treatment," according to the project plan.

Seafoam Green Colors Considered

Councilmembers considered sample replacement colors from three different companies for the railing. Two companies (CraneVeyor and Linetec) created a custom match to approximate the existing seafoam green color of the pier; one company (Ace) submitted its nearest match with a bluer shade.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, Councilmember Joe Franklin had brought sample pieces of railing with three paint choices down to the Manhattan Beach Pier to solicit public input.

An informal sample of public opinion seemed to be tied between the palest seafoam green from CraneVeyor and the bluer shade from Ace.

However, at Tuesday night's meeting, Councilmembers expressed a clear preference for the seafoam green proposed by CraneVeyor Corp., which is based in El Monte, California, and is the only California-based company from among the three paint samples considered.
