Manhattan Beach Police Alert Residents to Phone Scam

Feb 03, 2022 05:57PM ● By Mb News Staff
The Manhattan Beach Police Department is alerting residents to a phone scam in which the caller claims to be from the Manhattan Beach Police Department and demands payment.

The Manhattan Beach Police released the following statement on Thursday, February 3:

On Thursday February 3, 2022, The Manhattan Beach Police Department was made aware by some of our community members that they had received calls from an individual claiming to work for our police department.

The caller claims they have a warrant for the call recipient’s arrest and demand payment in the form of gift cards or Apple pay in order to avoid arrest. Technology allows the scammer to alter the CallerID to make it appear that the call is coming from the Manhattan Beach Police Department’s Non-Emergency Number, which is 310-802-5100.

Neither the Manhattan Beach Police Department nor any other City or Los Angeles County agency will call you to demand payment and threaten arrest for any matter.

If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Manhattan Beach Police
Department or any other law enforcement or government agency demanding payment, immediately HANG UP. Under no circumstances should you provide the caller any personal information.

If you have received one of these calls, or have been a victim of a phone scam, please call the
Manhattan Beach Police Department at (310) 802-5140 to file a report.
