Indoor Masking to Become Optional at Manhattan Beach Schools

Feb 28, 2022 09:36PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent John Bowes announced to parents on Monday night that indoor masking will become optional at Manhattan Beach public schools as of March 12.

The policy change comes as both the state and county departments of health announced changes to indoor masking requirements for schools. Masking indoors will continue to be "strongly recommended."

Bowes' message read as follows:

"Today, Governor Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced upcoming changes to the indoor masking requirements in TK-12 schools and childcare settings.

"The state announced that beginning Saturday, March 12, indoor masking for students and staff in TK-12 schools and childcare settings will shift from required to strongly recommended, irrespective of vaccine status. Additionally, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health  announced today that it will align its masking guidance with the CDPH. As such, the Manhattan Beach Unified School District will also align its masking protocols accordingly, which will allow students and staff a choice when it comes to indoor and outdoor masking on campuses starting Saturday, March 12, 2022."
