Manhattan Beach Issues Coyote Safety Reminders

Jun 23, 2022 08:25AM ● By Mb News Staff
An increase in coyote sightings has prompted the city of Manhattan Beach to release safety reminders to protect pets, children, and property from coyotes.

Coyotes do not require open space to survive, and have successfully adapted to living in close proximity to humans, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Coyotes are most active between dusk and dawn; however, they can be seen at any time of day.

The city has issued the following safety reminders regarding coyotes and other wildlife:

• Do not leave small children or pets outside unattended.

• If followed by a coyote, make loud noises. If this fails, throw rocks in the animal’s direction.

• If a coyote attacks a person, immediately call 911.

• Put garbage in tightly closed containers that cannot be tipped over (and if possible, wait until the morning to put the trash out).

• Remove sources of open/standing water.

• Bring pets in at night, and do not leave pet food outside.

• Avoid using bird feeders as they attract rodents and other coyote prey.

• Provide secure enclosures for rabbits or other outdoor pets.

Pick up fallen fruit, and cover compost piles.
