A two-alarm fire at a multi-family building in Manhattan Beach resulted in the loss of a pet dog early on Saturday morning.

A two-alarm fire that occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday at a multi-family structure  in Manhattan Beach resulted in the loss of a pet dog, according to the Manhattan Beach Fire Department.

Tim O'Brien, acting battalion chief on the scene, told MB News that the department responded to a call at 1:00 a.m. about a structure fire at a multi-family home at 116 9th Street.

Upon arriving, the crew saw flames coming from the second- and third-story windows.

MBFD called for a second alarm, with Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Torrance, and Los Angeles agencies responding. All told, eight fire engines, two fire trucks, and two paramedic rescues were on the scene.

"There was one occupant at the address and he was driven out by smoke and flames trying to save his dog," said O'Brien, who added that unfortunately, the dog - a beloved pet named Sunny - did not survive.

O'Brien said that there is extensive fire and smoke damage throughout the building and an investigation into the cause of the fire is in progress.
