Feb 07, 2023 11:49AM ● By Mb News Staff
Mira Costa High School band students have won a variety of local and national honors in recent weeks.

Honor Band of America

Mira Costa Band junior Gordon Whitlow was named to  the 2023 Honor Band of America. Gordon, a junior who plays tuba in the Wind Symphony Ensemble, was selected out of hundreds of applicants to be part of this selective ensemble.

He will be traveling to Indianapolis at the end of March to perform at the 2023 Music for All National Festival.

Since its inception in 1992, the Honor Band of America has earned a national reputation as one of the nation’s finest student concert honor bands.

National YoungArts Foundation

Mira Costa Band junior Cosmo Lieberman was selected as an Alto finalist in Jazz Saxophone for the National YoungArts Foundation awards. He joined 720 artists from across the country who were honored for their excellence in visual, literary, and performing arts. Selected through the organization’s prestigious competition, YoungArts award winners, all 15–18 years old or in grades 10–12, are chosen for the caliber of their artistic achievement by discipline-specific panels of artists through a blind adjudication process.

Lieberman participated in National YoungArts Week in January 2023 with in-person classes, workshops, and mentorship from leading artists. He is now eligible to be nominated to become a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, one of the highest honors given to high school seniors.
