Five local Mira Costa High School students have been selected to attend The American Legion (TAL) Boys & Girls State and the American Legion Auxiliary’s (ALA) Girls State conferences this summer.

Alex Chun, Dash Clark, Charles Hiatt, and Dean Stasso will represent Mira Costa High School at TAL Boys & Girls State and Katherine Jester will be the school’s sole representative for ALA Girl’s State.

TAL Boys & Girls State and ALA Girls State are among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. The one-week participatory programs for rising seniors offer an immersive, hands-on experience in civic responsibility, in which students become part of the operation of local, county, and state government.

Selected delegates were nominated by Mira Costa High School staff based on each students’ leadership qualities, scholastic achievements, and commitment and service to their school and community. Students were then interviewed and chosen by an American Legion representative.

“This year’s group of delegates perfectly personify all the characteristics this program is known for: dedication, integrity, and tenacity,” said Mira Costa College and Career Counselor Caryn Ramirez, who oversees the program on behalf of the high school. “This will be a great opportunity for them to gain valuable leadership skills and we are proud to have them represent Mira Costa this summer.”

TAL Boys & Girls State, which this year will hold its first co-ed session, is scheduled for June 17-24. ALA Girls State is scheduled for June 26-July 1, 2023. Both programs will take place at California State University, Sacramento. About 1,000 students from across California attend each program annually, culminating with two students being selected for Boys Nation and Girls Nation and a trip to Washington, D.C.
