Friday night update: The Mira Costa boys' game against Aliso Niguel ended scoreless at 0-0. Since Mira Costa won their previous game, their 1-0 aggregate point total moves them to Round Two of the CIF Open Division Playoffs.
The Mira Costa girls' soccer team kicked off a big soccer weekend by besting Millikan High School on Thursday, 2-1, in the first game of the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs.
The girls will play Millikan again on Saturday. (Under the Open Division playoff format, the teams play each other twice and the team with the most points advances to the next round.)
Meanwhile, the boys' soccer team has a big game tonight at Mira Costa's Waller Stadium, where they play Aliso Niguel for game two of two. Costa won the first game at Aliso Niguel.
On Thursday night's girls' game, senior Juju Arensdorf scored the goal in the first half. In the second half, a pass by junior Mckenna Cooper (and a bounce off the head from a Millikan player) gave the team its 2-1 edge.
The girls were cheered on by the Mira Costa boys' soccer team, who led a chant of "Ole, Ole" in the stands following the goal. (See the video at this link or watch it directly below.)
The boys have a 23-1-3 overall record, with a 9-0-1 record in the Bay League.
